The wind tunnel according to Göttinger design is a wind tunnel with flow recirculation, which means that it has a closed circuit. The fan is located in the return duct of the wind tunnel, as far away as possible from the measuring section.

After the fan, the air flows into corners with guiding vanes. These not only ensure a lower pressure level, but also a more homogeneous flow profile compared to normal pipe elbows. The air then flows through a calming chamber with a flow straightener (or honeycomb) and damping screens into the wind tunnel nozzle. In the nozzle, the air is accelerated to the respective air velocity (or measuring velocity at the outlet of the nozzle). This is followed by an open measuring section (a closed measuring chamber is also possible).

The air then flows via a collector and diffuser into a further corner and from there into the fan.

 

 

  • The main advantages of a wind tunnel according to Göttinger design can be summarised as follows:
     
  • Lower power requirement due to "closed-loop" operation
     
  • Approaching atmospheric conditions (especially pressure) in the measuring section
     
  • Less susceptibility to external influences such as pressure surges etc.
     
  • The open measuring section makes it easier to access (especially when calibrating particularly long sensors or similar)
     
  • Possibility of temperature control / cooling
     
  • No flow in the laboratory (due to flow recirculation), thus multiple use possible
